Parental Involvement - 2016-2017
Across the year, we held an Understanding Behaviour course, a Family Language course, a Family English course and a Family Maths course. All of these courses were taught by Manchester Adult Education Service (MAES).
Stay and Play sessions took place in Nursery every Friday, and in Reception every other week.
Celebration Gallery - Year 1
On Monday 12th June 2017, Year 1 held a ‘Celebration Gallery’ as their class assembly. This gave the opportunity for the children to share their books with their parents and carers, and the parents/carers of their classmates, and to talk to them about what they had learnt so far this term.

Shared Learning - Upper Key Stage 2
On Thursday 8th June 2017 we held a Shared Learning session for parents of children in Upper Key Stage 2. The session was designed to give parents the opportunity to get involved in their child’s learning.

Parent Learning Event - STEAM
On Wednesday 17th May 2017 we held a Parent Learning Event on ‘STEAM’ (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths). Children and their parents were invited to join us from 3.45 – 4.45 in an event where they could participate in different activities together. The activities that we held included smoothie making (measuring ingredients for maths), science experiments, tower building (engineering), timing sport events, shape art (maths and arts), animations (technology), beebot and robot programming (technology), music technology (technology and arts) and maths games.
Over 130 children and their parents joined us for the event, and thoroughly enjoyed it, as did the staff. Children were given a record card to take round with them, collecting a stamp on their card from each activity they visited. Children who participated in 6 or more activities will be given a certificate and a prize for their participation. The stickers, certificates and prizes were all linked to the theme of STEAM.
During the week around the Parent Learning Event we also had various activities and themed days taking place across the school. These included lots of exciting science experiments, computer programming and coding and lots of problem solving and hands on maths fun. Reception and Year 1 both went on visits to the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), and Years 3-6 all went on trips to the World Museum in Liverpool. Year 2 had Wild Workshops, themed around their science topic, and they also went mini beast hunting.

Year 5 Celebration Gallery
On Wednesday 3rd May 2017 Year 5 held a Celebration Gallery, a class assembly format whereby the children set up different ‘stations’ to share what they have learnt with parents/carers, through practical activities.

Year 1 Shared Learning
On Friday 28th April 2017 we held a shared learning session for parents of children in Year 1. The session was designed to support the parents in understanding how their child learns in school and how they can support them at home.

Reception and Year 1 Maths workshop
On Thursday 27th April 2017 we held a maths workshop for parents of children In Reception and Year 1, ready for next year. The session was designed to support the parents in understanding how to support their child with maths at home.

Year 2 Presentation assembly
On Monday 6th March 2017, Year 2 had their class presentation assembly, sharing learning that they had done this year.

Key Stage 2 Shared Learning - Book Week
On Thursday 2nd March 2017 we held a Shared Learning event for parents of children in Key Stage 2. The event was held as part of our book week, with parents being invited in to work with their child to create part of a book, linked to stories the children have been writing.

Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 Shared Learning - Book Week
On Wednesday 1st March 2017 we held a Shared Learning event for parents of children in Key Stage 1 and Foundation Stage. The event was held as part of our book week, with parents being invited in to work with their child to create part of a book, linked to stories the children have been writing.

Year 1 Presentation Assembly
On Monday 13th February 2017 Year 1 held a ‘Presentation Assembly’. This gave the opportunity for the children to share their learning with their parents and carers, and the parents/carers of their classmates, and to present what they had learnt so far this year, including one of their Talk for Write units.

Online Learning and e-safety
On Wednesday 8th February 2017 we held an online learning and e-safety workshop aimed at parents of children in Year 3 and Year 4. The session was designed to enable the parents to understand how to support their child with using the school website and other internet pages to support their child’s learning, and also how to ensure their child is safe online at home.

Talk for Writing
On Wednesday 1st February 2017 we held a Talk for Writing workshop for parents of children in all key stages. The session was designed to support the parents in understanding how Talk for Write is delivered and how they can support their child at home. At the event parents were informed about the learning that takes place in English across school and were shown how the Talk for Write process works, and how it supports the children’s learning. A Talk for Write text was shared during the event with the text mapping process modelled, to enable parents to support their children at home with the learning of texts.

Parent Learning Event - Acacias Has Talent
On Wednesday 26th January we held a parent learning event on the theme of ‘Acacias Has Talent’. Children and their parents were invited to join us from 3.45 – 4.45 in an event where we looked at the various talents that people could have within the arts. The activities that we held were; sculpture, weaving, singing, poetry performance, music, art relaxation, drama games, photography, dance, collage and origami. Over 70 children and their parents joined us for the event, and thoroughly enjoyed it, as did the staff. Children were given a record card to take round with them, collecting a stamp for their card from each activity they visited. Children who participated in 6 or more activities were given a certificate and a prize for their participation, following the event. The stickers, certificates and prizes were all linked to the theme of Talents and being ‘stars’.

Year 1 Shared Learning
On Friday 20th January 2017 parents of children in Year 1 were invited in to a Shared Learning event, to learn with their children in school. They looked at what the children are learning in Science this half term.

Speech and Language support workshop
On Thursday 19th January 2017 our SpLD teacher, Susan Whittaker, and our Speech and Language therapist, Laura Milsom, ran a parent workshop around Speech and Language difficulties. The workshop was designed to help parents to understand what difficulties their child may face with learning, how these difficulties are supported in school and how to support them at home. A range of ideas were given, and it gave parents a chance to have their queries answered.
Upper Key Stage 2 Shared Learning
On Tuesday 13th December 2016 parents of children in Year 5 and Year 6 were invited in to a Shared Learning event, to learn with their children in school. They looked at how the children learn texts in the Talk for Write process.

Hour of Code
On Wednesday 7th December 2016 we had an 'Hour of Code' day. The Hour of Code is a global movement by Computer Science Education Week, which started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts. During our Hour of Code day, we invited parents in to try some coding activities with our Code Club members and Digital Leaders.
Lower Key Stage 2 Shared Learning
On Tuesday 6th December 2016 parents of children in Year 3 and Year 4 were invited in to a Shared Learning event, to learn with their children in school. They took part in a range of interesting activities, including making clay pots. Lots of parents attended, and enjoyed participating in the learning taking place in the classrooms.

Over the autumn term a number of parents took part in a Family Maths course provided by Manchester Adult Education Service. The course provided the parents with support on how to support children with their maths at home. They learnt more about how children are taught Maths in school, resources and activities that could be used at home and educational games for children. All parents were given a certificate of completion in the final session, on Monday 5th December.

On Wednesday 23rd November 2016 Year 1 held a ‘Celebration Gallery’ as their class assembly. This gave the opportunity for the children to share their books with their parents and carers, and the parents/carers of their classmates, and to talk to them about what they had learnt so far this year. The session lasted 20 minutes, and all children from Year 1 were involved in discussing their learning.

Year 1 Phonics workshop
On Wednesday 23rd November 2016 we held a Phonics workshop for parents of children in Year 1. The session was designed to support the parents in understanding how phonics is taught and the phonics screening that will take place towards the end of Year 1.

Parent Learning Event - Brilliant Britain
On Wednesday 16th November we held a parent learning event on the theme of 'Brilliant Britain'. Children and their parents were invited to join us from 3.45 – 4.45 in an event where we looked at what makes Britain Brilliant, incorporating the British Values that are taught in school. The activities that we held were; voting for our favourite things, creating crowns, making our own Banksy art work, food tasting (scones and cucumber sandwiches), biscuit decorating, making poppies, creating a Union Jack from British things, mapping Britain, quizzes and cricket (indoor due to weather - rain couldn't stop our play!). Over 130 children and their parents joined us for the event, and thoroughly enjoyed it, as did the staff. Children were given a record card to take round with them, collecting a sticker for their card from each activity they visited. Children who participated in 6 or more activities were given a certificate and a prize for their participation, following the event. Year 1 Shared Learning - Phonics
On Friday 11th November 2016 we held a Shared Learning session for parents of children in Year 1. The session was designed to support the parents in understanding how phonics is delivered and to enable them to support their children at home.

Department of Health - Food nutrition
On Thursday 10th November 2016 the Department of Health held a food nutrition session, in order to find out how clear nutrition labelling was on food packaging and how well it was understood by parents and children. A number of parents were invited to attend the session, along with some of our Year 6 pupils. They completed a short quiz about food nutrition and healthy eating, and then looked at the nutrition labelling on a variety of food packaging, giving feedback to the representatives from the Department of Health.

Feedback was taken from the parents, as this was the first time that an assembly had been done in this way. Parents said:

Nursery coffee morning
On Wednesday 19th October 2016 we held a coffee morning for parents of children in Nursery. The coffee morning was held to give parents of Nursery children a chance to talk to staff in school about what their child is doing in school, and to ask any questions they may have had.

Macmillan coffee morning
On Friday 30th September 2016 we held a coffee morning in order to raise money for Macmillan cancer support. Staff were asked to bake cakes for the event. Approximately 30-40 parents attended over the course of the coffee morning, and over £160 was raised. As it was an informal coffee morning, designed to support a national charity, feedback forms were not given out. However, the opportunity was taken to discuss relevant issues with the parents who attended, including encouraging parents to attend craft sessions that are being set up to create items to sell at the Christmas fair. We also discussed methods of communicating with parents, discussing what one of the local high schools does in terms of communicating with parents, and how this could influence our communication.
Key Stage 1 Shared Learning Event
On Friday 23rd September 2016 we held a Shared Learning session for parents of children in Key Stage 1. The sessions in Year 2 supported the parents in understanding the teaching of phonics and also enabled parents to understand how to support reading at home. In Year 1 the session focused on the teaching of maths and how parents could support this at home. A reading workshop was also held for KS1 parents the following week (Wednesday 28th September) with parents attending to find out more information about how to support their child with reading at home.
