The Anglo Saxons - Athelstan

Here are some fun facts about King Athelstan of England.

1. His name means “noble stone”.

2. Athelstan spoke Old English

3. Athelstan never married. His half-brother Edmund was his successor.

4. Athelstan became king at the age of 30.

5. In different Anglo-Saxon sources Athelstan is referred to as “King of the English”, the “Greatest King of England”

 and the “Young Prince of England”.

6. Athelstan was a very pious and devout ruler. He was known as the “Holy Roman Emperor of the Anglo-Saxons”.

7. The Welsh Kings who swore loyalty to Athelstan had to pay him 25,000 sheep every year as tribute.

8. Athelstan ruled England for 14 years.

9. Athelstan reformed the English monasteries. He developed a system of charity within the English Church where the rich donated money to the poor.

10. Athelstan was known for being a great decision-maker. He was a great patron of art and literature. He collected many pieces of art and manuscripts which he donated to the English Church.
